A recently new phenomenon in Perth over the past 5 or so years has been the increase in the number of cute and cosy small bars that have popped up around the place. I have had the good fortune to have experienced a few of them over that time and one of my favourites is the Stanley – www.facebook.com/pages/The-Stanley/165491456813324 . Take a couple of old run down shops and fit them out with some funky antique furniture, décor that mix and matches a range of styles and create a few choice nooks to gather and chat either in a group or just 2 0r 3 people and put in a great bar and you have a space that works incredibly well in this location.
It has a great feel to it, although when you fill it with lots of people it can be a little too noisy to have a quiet drink but it does remind me of the old wine bars that I used to frequent in Melbourne in my days as an apprentice chef. The Stanley has created a really cool vibe that encourages chat, the chance to try some new and evolving wines and a great space to catch up with friends after work or later in the evening for a nightcap.
Cozy, well laid out and welcoming
They also have an outdoor area that is also comfy and encourages discussion and relaxing. The environment is one that is friendly not pretentious and with great knowledgeable staff behind the bar makes for a good night out. The wine list, whilst not extensive, is constantly changing and has a good range of different and interesting wines that are not just made up of local tipples but can include wines from anywhere in the world that take the Stanley sommeliers fancy. I like to try a range of different wines and open my mind to new blends from different countries and regions and last night had the good fortune to try 2 really nice Italian whites.
The beauty of the Stanley is the ever changing wine list and as we get to drop in there every couple of months it is always a nice surprise to find new untested wines on the list and to get the chance to either buy by the glass or if there are a few of us, like there was last night, we get the chance to go through a couple of bottles.
Italian wine a blanco blend – delicious!
Matched with that is the chance to head next door to Flipside and order a great burger, which they then deliver to you in at the Stanley and you can have a great, no fuss, laid back evening in a great location.
As Scarborough residents it was a great chance to catch up with some great friends of ours, taste some great wines and share a bit to eat. Flipside create what I like to think of as ‘real’ burgers – great fresh ingredients and they remind me of the burgers I used to get at home in Melbourne when I was growing up well before we got to heading to the golden arches. The range of burgers on offer is great and to also get their hand cut chips to sit along side the burger and you have a filling well put together meal.
The Flipside burger and hand but chips…
As you can tell I really enjoyed and will go back an enjoy again, the evening at the Stanley and love the small bar alternative to some of the larger more crowded places that are around for a more intimate, laid back, no fuss, mid week easy night out with friends.
