So once again the flurry of awards shows in the US is upon us and it is once again time to dissect who is wearing what and by whom, as well as looking at who made it work and who really missed the mark.
I did not get to watch the red carpet arrivals this year so was relying on what I saw from the awards broadcast and then looked back at the telecast to make my decision on the best and the rest for the Golden Globes, which is always one of the first award ceremonies for the year!
A couple of looks got little support from me when I saw them sitting at a table in the Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel but when I looked back on them on the red carpet I changed my mind.
One stand out for me who has made many worst dressed list but who I think looks amazing is Jane Fonda – there has been much said about the ruffles and this was one look that did not work when sitting at a table but on the red carpet she looked radiant and full of poise as we have come to expect from her and so makes it easily into my best dressed list for this year.
Stunning in Yves St Laurent Couture!
The other 9 for my list this year are:
This is Hollywood glamour to the extreme! Lady Gaga looked like a star with this stunning black custom made Versace dress that was a real throwback to the old days of Hollywood red carpets and she once again showed why she is always turning heads in whatever she wears.
This was the perfect ensemble from ‘Jenny from the Block’ that was sultry, sophisticated and pure glamour. The stunning Giambattista Valli gown was topped by 200 carats of Harry Winston diamonds just to add a little sparkle.
Another star who has been criticized for this blush pink Givenchy gown, I thought was pure glamour and she once again showed why she has become Hollywood royalty. Along with the perfect make-up and the swept to the side hair she was an absolute delight!
Taraji P Henson
I have loved Taraji P Henson since her Person of Interest days when I first started watching her and she was a real stand out on the red carpet in this perfectly fitted white Stella McCartney. A true delight!
Another actress who has split the fashion commentators right down the middle, I just loved Julianne Moore in this striking blue Tom Ford outfit. Arriving on the arm of the designer himself, this was a the perfect entrance to the Globes red carpet.
What a delight Olivia Polermo was in the this stunning, playful Delpozo dress that was very fashion forward and took a risk by not being the full length glamour that is usually favored at the Globes but it sure did work and proved that she was once again a stand out on the red carpet.
Jennifer Lawrence never puts a foot wrong and once again in this Dior Couture gown she showed what a real star should look like on the red carpet. This was a real delight and once again ensured that she would make it onto every best dressed list that was being compiled from the Golden Globes.
When you have a body like Kate Hudson does why not show it off? Well a few of the fashion critiques have called this look a disaster but I thought that she owned the red carpet from the very beginning. This was just beautiful and the hair, makeup and even the shoes were the perfect match for this Michael Kors cut out dress.
Maggie Gyllenhaal looked like a star in this Marc Jacobs black and gold gown that was a reminder of some real old world Hollywood glamour and made a real statement on the red carpet when so many others chose to wear one colour. It was a brave choice that worked for her.
My top 5 of the rest who just did not get the look right on the night are:
Oh my should I start with the hair or the very plain and boring dress that made me look twice before I realised it was Katy Perry…what was she thinking with this whole look? This Prada pink dress was just all wrong.
At first glance I was a fan of this ensemble but on reflecting on it I think it was just too much for Amy Shummer all round. It was a bad fit and just did not work for her at all. I would have also added some earrings and simple necklace to complete the look and perhaps take away from the puffy black skirt. From Prabal Gurung it just did not work!
Melissa was very proud of the fact that she had designed this dress by Melissa McCarthy Seven7 but I am not sure I would own it. It was just ill fitting and we have seen some of our favorite stars will fuller figures look sensational on the red carpet but on this occasion Melissa missed the mark.
This Krikor Jabotian dress would have been better left without the cape. If that had been the case then I think Regina King might have missed getting on just about every worst dressed list. The cape was a mistake and the dress had just a little too much going on, let alone adding in the disastrous shoes that were chosen to go with the look.
Patricia Arquette has been on both the best and worst dressed lists over the years and this year she once again made quite a few worst dressed lists with this Paule Ka Black dress. It would have been much better without the large white bow which completely dominated the look and did nothing at all the give any glamour to her walk down the red carpet.
So that is my wrap of the first red carpet event of 2016 and there are so many more to come. I should make a couple of honorable mentions that would usually have made my best dressed list but I wanted to restrict it to just 10 again!
Laverne Cox looked amazing in an Elizabeth Kennedy gown that fitted her like a glove and Tom Ford looked fabulous in a Tom Ford velvet jacket and the perfect pants and shoes that were simply irresistible, but then what do you expect from the designer?
